Set up Rehome
Have your iPad, plus a phone or computer where Home Assistant opens. You try Rehome free first, and buy only if you like it.
If Settings → Apps shows Install app
Tap the button on the phone or computer where Home Assistant opens. It asks to add Rehome. If Home Assistant answers This redirect is not supported by your Home Assistant installation, yours runs in Docker: skip to Run Rehome in Docker below.
Add Rehome to Home AssistantThe first time, it asks for your Home Assistant's address. Usually that is homeassistant.local:8123. If the button does nothing, go to Settings → Apps → Install app (Add-on Store on older Home Assistant) → ⋮ → Repositories, and add github.com/rehome-app/rehome-addons.
Tap Add. Find Rehome in the list, tap it, then Install. When it finishes, tap Start and turn on Show in sidebar.
In Safari, go to the same address and sign in. Tap Rehome in the sidebar. You will see a sample home with made-up rooms. Tap around: nothing you tap changes your real home.
In Rehome, open its Settings, then Home Screen & Other iPads, and tap Put Rehome on This iPad's Home Screen. The Use Rehome full screen bubble in Home Assistant's sidebar lands in the same place. Rehome opens full screen in Safari. There, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Open Rehome from its new icon.
Safari's own Share button inside Home Assistant would save Home Assistant, not Rehome.
The iPad 1 to 4 and the first iPad mini cannot open Home Assistant's pages. On a phone or computer where Rehome already opens, go to Settings, then Home Screen & Other iPads, and tap Make a Setup Sheet. It shows an address, a code that works once for 7 days, and a QR code.
On the old iPad, type the address into Safari, tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Open Rehome from the new icon and type the code.
Buy Rehome for $4.99, once. Open the “Your Rehome key” email from support@userehome.com on the iPad, press and hold the key, tap Copy. In Rehome, open its own Settings, tap Rehome License, paste the key and tap Save Key. Your home appears.
Open Home Assistant and go to Settings → Apps. If you see Install app (Add-on Store on older Home Assistant), the steps above are yours. That is Home Assistant OS, including the Green and Yellow.
If that page says Why you see this page instead of an app store, or http://homeassistant.local:8123/hassio/store says 404, your Home Assistant runs in Docker, Container or Core. Rehome then runs as its own small container next to it, with four copy-paste lines. The Docker steps are below.
No Home Assistant yet? You need it first. A Home Assistant Green is the simplest start: plug it in and follow its steps.
Usually that means signing in to your Raspberry Pi or home server over SSH from your computer.
mkdir -p ~/rehome && cd ~/rehome curl -fsSLO https://raw.githubusercontent.com/rehome-app/rehome-addons/main/standalone/docker-compose.yml touch rehome.env docker compose up -d && docker compose logs --tail 30
After a minute you should see a line that says pairing code for an iPad: 123456. Note the six digits.
Empty? Wait ten seconds and run the logs line again: docker compose logs --tail 30
In Safari, go to http://<that computer's address>:8099, for example http://192.168.1.20:8099. Tap Share, then Add to Home Screen, then Add. Open Rehome from the new icon and type the six digits. You should see the sample home, full screen.
The computer's address is in Home Assistant under Settings, then System, then Network, or in your router's device list. Type it with http://, not https://, and keep the :8099.
In Home Assistant, open your Profile, then Security, then Long-lived access tokens, then Create token. Name it Rehome and copy it.
On the computer, type nano ~/rehome/rehome.env and write two lines: HA_URL=http://localhost:8123 (use your Home Assistant's port if it is not 8123) and HA_TOKEN= followed by the token. Save with Ctrl-O, Enter, then Ctrl-X.
chmod 600 ~/rehome/rehome.env && docker compose up -d
Keep the token in that file only: never in a chat or an email.
In Rehome, under Settings, then Rehome License. The same as the Apps path.
Updating later: cd ~/rehome && docker compose pull && docker compose up -d. Your pairings, key and photos are kept. Rehome uses port 8099, so it does not clash with Home Assistant. Do not forward that port from your router. The full guide, with the compose file, is at github.com/rehome-app/rehome-addons.
